President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has attended the opening ceremony of the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The Maldivian leader departed to Antigua and Barbuda from Velana International Airport (VIA) on May 24, to attend the Fourth International Conference on SIDS.

Upon arrival, President Muizzu was received by Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres and the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne.

As part of the summit, the president will be delivering his national statement at the plenary of the summit.

Further, Muizzu will be engaging in discussions with a number of foreign dignitaries.

The Maldivian leader will be delivering remarks at some of the side events as part of the summit as well.

Alongside being one of the Vice Presidents of the conference, President Muizzu is also a co-chair of one of the five interactive dialogues organized by the United Nations (UN) at the conference.

The SIDS conference is hosted by the UN once a decade.

The Fourth International Conference on SIDS is scheduled to take place in Antigua and Barbuda from May 27 – 30.

The conference is themed "Charting the Course Towards Resilient Prosperity."

This year’s SIDS conference will revolve around clearing a path for small, environmentally fragile nations to attain sustainability and prosperity. One of the key highlights is the adoption of a new programme of action, the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS.

The president was invited to attend the Fourth International Conference on SIDS by the PM of Antigua and Barbuda back in December 2023.

Maldives and Antigua and Barbuda established diplomatic relations on 25 March 2002.
