A man has been arrested and remanded in connection with a case of drug smuggling.

The arrest was made in connection with a case of drugs being discovered inside a luggage that was illegally transported from Velana International terminal to domestic.

The Criminal Court ordered to remand the suspect involved in the case, for a period of 15 days.

Arrested and remanded in connection with the case is a 32-year-old Maldivian man.

He is accused of violating the legal mandate while transporting luggage from the airport’s international terminal to the domestic terminal.

Drugs weighing five kilograms were discovered inside the luggage.

However, the accused has denied all allegations against him, saying that he did not interact with anyone involved in the case in any way and that he was told to transport the luggage, by someone else.

The suspect claimed to have been unaware that the luggage contained narcotics.

However, it was clear that the suspect acted in violation of the norms and regulations followed at the airport, in the manner in which he acted.

The court order stated that sufficient evidence has been submitted against him.

As such, statements by witnesses, snap shots from CCTV footage and the report of the scene of crime officer were submitted alongside other evidence to prove the allegations against him.

The suspect was remanded for the safety and security of the community.
