Major (Retired) Thalhath Hassan has taken his oath as the newly appointed Sergeant at Arms at the People’s Majlis.

His appointment to the post was approved by a majority of votes on the issue of appointing a Sergeant at Arms, in accordance with Article 18 (b) of the People’s Majlis Act, during a parliament sitting on March 27.

35 parliamentarians who took part, voted in favor of his appointment.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’ the People’s Majlis revealed that Thalhath took oath on Monday.

Thalhath, who retired from the rank of Major at the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), also served as a board member of the State Electric Company (STELCO) during the former administration of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

He served in the armed forces for 21 years.

According to the parliament policies, the Sergeant at Arms is the second-highest position in the house, next to the general secretary.

Thalhath’s appointment to the post comes after Mohamed Haleem who earlier served in the position, was sacked.

He was sacked during August 2022.

Haleem was initially appointed to the post on 19 November 2013.

He was then re-appointed for a second term, on 3 October 2019.
