Two individuals have been arrested and remanded under accusations of drug smuggling and trafficking.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested a 27-year-old Maldivian man and a 24-year-old Maldivian man in connection with the case.
They are accused of smuggling and trafficking drugs across the Maldives.
The 27-year-old was remanded for a 15-day period and the 24-year-old suspect was remanded for a period of five days.
The Criminal Court ordered for them to be remanded in a custodial jail.
The reason cited by the court for their detention is that sufficient evidence has been submitted against them as well as the investigation statement and the documents by the Maldives Customs Service.
Further, the decision was reached in the interest of the public’s safety and security and as it is deemed that the provisions of Section 13 of the Code of Criminal Procedure relating to the trial, are met.
Both suspects do not have any past criminal records.
However, the involvement of the 27-year-old is likely, he is expected to be linked to the package containing drugs and logistics pro.
The 24-year-old involved in the case is to have claimed that the package belonged to the other suspect.
Even though the 24-year-old has said this, the order states that he was the one who received the package.
Further, the package was with him at the time of the arrest as well.
The attorney sought a short remand for him, as he was unable to meet his lawyers, with which he was given five days in custodial remand.
