Gov’t announces project to build 75 housing units in M. Dhiggaru

The government is to initiate a project to develop 75 housing units in Dhiggaru island of Meemu atoll, within the year.

This was announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, while speaking to residents of the island on Wednesday.

Taking the podium at the meeting, the president announced that the construction of 75 housing units would commence in Dhiggaru island throughout 2024.

Highlighting that alongside the harbor development project, essential measures will be implemented to ensure basic amenities such as water and sanitation is available on the reclaimed land.

He also noted that a road construction project would be initiated in a bid to assist residents understand the comprehensive plans the government has for the island’s progress.

Shedding light on the recent initiatives undertaken by his administration to tackle economic challenges and bolster revenue streams, the president expressed commitment to create opportunities for citizens to accumulate wealth.

He also noted that authorizing local councils to acquire islands for economic benefits either within or outside their jurisdictions, mirrors this goal.

In addition to this, he stated that more islands would be included in the list, available for such applications, alongside an extension of the lease duration from 10 to 25 years in accordance with the government gazette.

This amendment carries the purpose of providing enhanced opportunities for businesses from several sectors to operate on these islands.
