A large stash of narcotics held in police custody and confiscated during multiple different operations, have been destroyed.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the destroyed narcotics weighed 103 kilograms.
According to the police institution, destroyed were 3,121 pieces of evidence involved in 197 incidents and 958 cases.
These include 8,293 rubber packets, 2,731 pieces of cellophane, 237 empty film cannister filled with narcotics, 585 bullets, 30 joints and 537 illegal pills.
3,045 other items were destroyed as well.
According to MPS, the items destroyed had a street value of more than MVR 425,590,234.92.
As per the latest changes brought to the regulations under which drugs are disposed, drugs seized by the police in different cases are disposed of at the earliest after keeping it at the level that is legally mandated for investigation.
The institution revealed that the drugs were destroyed under the supervision of the relevant police team and under the set legal procedure for it.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, Deputy Commissioner of Police Faruhad Fikuree, executive police officers and commissioner police officers supervised the event.
Further, journalists and members of the general public who listed their names to observe the event, also took part.
