Maldives is to observe a two-day mourning period

The national flag of Maldives is to be flown at half-mast in honor of the late President of Namibia Hage G. Geingob.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision on Monday.

As such, it has been declared that the national flag will be flown at half-mast from February 6 – 7, in mourning for the late Namibian leader.

Maldives is to observe a two-day mourning period, while joining world leaders across the world to mourn the death of the late Namibian president.

In a message to the acting president of the Republic of Namibia, Nangolo Mbumba, President Muizzu offered condolences on Monday.

Expressing deep sorrow to learn of the Namibian leader’s passing, the Maldivian leader offered sincere condolences to the government and people of Namibia and the bereaved family of the late Namibian leader, on behalf of the government and people of Maldives.

He shed light on the late Namibian president’s commitment to enhance democratic principles, governance, and economic development in Namibia.

Muizzu stated that future generations will undoubtedly remember his legacy.

Diplomatic relations were established between Maldives and Namibia on 26 July 1990.

The Namibian president passed away at the age of 83 in the early hours of Sunday, weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.
