A large stash of alcohol in police custody which was confiscated during multiple operations, has been destroyed in Maamigili island of Alif Dhaal atoll.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the alcohol was destroyed under the supervision of the relevant police committee and under the set legal procedure for it.
The alcohol was destroyed on January 11, inside the Maamigili Police Station premises.
Destroyed in Maamigili island were 1,738 bottles of different alcohol brands confiscated in connection with 248 different cases, alongside 557 cans of beer.
MPS revealed that the destroyed alcohol and beers were handed over to them by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officials at Velana International Airport (VIA).
MNDF officers confiscated the bottles of alcohol and cans of beer from tourists that arrived at the airport for departure, between 11 July 2023 and 8 January 2024.
Further, nine bottles of alcohol and cans of beer of different brands involved in three cases investigated by the police institution, were also destroyed.
