Maldives and the People’s Republic of China has held official talks.
The official talks between the Maldives and China was led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and President Xi Jinping, respectively, as part of the Maldivian First Couple's ongoing state visit to China.
The President Dr. Muizzu, and President Xi Jinpin held the official talks on Wednesday, at the Great Hall of People in Beijing.
During the talks, President Dr. Muizzu expressed gratitude for China's significant role in the Maldives' economic success and for China's generous assistance in social housing, higher education, and infrastructure development of the Maldives.
The President also explored avenues for expanding tourism cooperation and air connectivity between the two countries.
The meeting saw President Xi Jinping congratulating President Dr. Muizzu on his election victory and expressed confidence that the visit would mark the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations between China and the Maldives. He also expressed hope to strengthen cooperation in various areas, including the blue, green, and digital economies.
Furthermore, both the leaders conveyed optimism that the bilateral ties between the two nations will continue to strengthen in the future.
The official talks followed the signing of 20 key agreements between the two countries in the presence of President Dr. Muizzu and President Xi Jinping.
President Dr. Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed departed to China on a state visit on 07 January, 2024.
Presiden Xi Jinping, and the First Lady of China, Madam Peng Liyuan, officially welcomed the Maldivian First Couple on Wednesday.
The arrival of President Dr. Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha followed a 21-gun salute and the national anthems of both countries played by the Chinese Military Band.
President Dr. Muizzu accompanied by President Xi Jinping then inspected the Guard of Honor.
During the ceremony, President Dr. Muizzu was greeted by and introduced to the Chinese dignitaries, followed by the Maldivian dignitaries introduction to President Xi Jinping.
