A man found guilty of trafficking cannabis has been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined MVR 100,000.
Charges were raised against Saifullah Saeed, native to Gan island of Laamu Atoll.
He was charged following an investigation into a controlled delivery operation.
According to the Narcotics Act, a control delivery operation is conducted with the permission of the Commissioner of Police or his designee for the purpose of identifying and apprehending the main traffickers of drugs imported into the country, or drugs moved from one place to another for sale within the country.
Saifullah—who is involved in this case—took possession of the drugs that someone else had brought into the nation. Upon examining him, the police officers found in his pocket, an empty film canister with suspected narcotics.
In connection to the case, he was charged with cannabis trafficking. Saifullah pleaded not guilty to the charges.
As such, he stated that the shorts he was wearing belonged to a friend of his and that he did not know that there was a bottle of drugs in the pocket.
He was found guilty of the charges by the court and was sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000.
After his term of custody is deducted from the sentence, Saifullah will serve a prison sentence of 24 years, 10 months and six days.
The sentence was handed down at the Criminal Court by Judge Ali Adam.
