Body of the infant discovered inside some plastic bags, in Dhigurah Island of Alif Dhaalu Atoll, has been brought back to the Maldives after post-mortem examinations.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) disclosed that the infant's body was sent to neighboring India for autopsy on 15 December, 2023.

Arrested in connection with the case is the baby's mother, who is a Sri Lankan woman. She was arrested from Velana International Airport, on 03 December, while attempting to flee from the country to Sri Lanka.

MPS disclosed that she was presented to the Criminal Court for remand hearing, on 04 December.

Upon being presented to the court, she was ordered to be remanded until the end of her trial.

MPS disclosed that a body of an infant was discovered in some plastic bags at a waste site, of Dhigurah Island, on 03 December. The authority received information of the case at around 09:20 am, 03 December.

Citing the doctor who examined the infant, MPS revealed that baby was dead, when they found the body.

A police team is currently on the island to further investigate the case. They have also closed the waste site.

MPS also stated that they will be sharing more information about the case, as it becomes available.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, an islander revealed that the infant was discovered by individuals who had visited the waste site to separate waste. As such, they noted that the infant was wrapped inside three black, plastic bags.
