The parliament sitting to elect the Deputy Speaker of People's Majlis has been scheduled for Sunday night.
A new Deputy Speaker of the parliament is being elected following the resignation of MP for North Galolhu constituency, Eva Abdulla, from her post as Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis on Sunday.
Eva presented her letter of resignation during Sunday's parliament setting, while the no-confidence motion against her was ongoing.
The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) filed the no-confidence motion against Eva at the People’s Majlis with the signatures of 50 lawmakers. The notice of the motion was sent to Eva and the parliament members on November 16.
During Sunday's siting, the resolution filed by MDP, calling for a no-confidence motion against Eva was presented by the MP of R. Dhuvaafaru, Ismail Ahmed.
Eva spoke on her behalf during the sitting before delivering her letter of resignation.
Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam disclosed that the Majlis has received Eva's written letter of resignation as per the Article 82 (c) of the Maldivian constitution.
Aslam also stated that he would not proceed with the motion to remove Eva from the post as she had already presented her letter of resignation.
Aslam announced that the sitting to elect the new Deputy Speaker of parliament will be held at 08:30 pm, Sunday, as per Article 82 (a) of the Maldivian constitution.
