President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has resigned from his post as Malé City Mayor ahead of taking is oath as the new president of Maldives.

The president-elect’s inauguration is slated for 4:45pm on Friday.

Even after his victory over outgoing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the second round of the presidential election this year, he did not resign from his post as the capital’s mayor, despite having shied away from his mayoral duties.

In a Twitter post mere hours before his inauguration, Dr. Muizzu confirmed his resignation.

In his post, the president-elect expressed sincere gratitude to the councilors, leaders and employees at the council, for their generous support and resilient work.

He also thanked the people of Malé City for their support since being elected as mayor.

Dr. Muizzu assured the citizens that he would work with a strong resolve to fulfil their aspirations by the grace of Allah.

After Dr. Muizzu was elected the president of the Maldives for the next five years, the responsibilities of mayor were handed over to the deputy mayor to spare time for transitional work.

The duties were officially handed over to the deputy mayor at the 119th official general meeting of the city council.

The People’s Majlis earlier revealed that a total of MVR 22 million would be spent for the swearing-in ceremony of the president-elect and vice-president-elect.
