Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that officers entered the parliament building on Monday in order to 'remove some members who have lost their parliament seats'.

Police, via twitter, said that Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has sought assistance from the institution, to remove those who had entered the premises illegally.

"Would like to inform that police officers entered the parliament premises after MNDF requested assistance to remove some individuals who have been removed from their parliament seats", reads the tweets.

Earlier in July, the Supreme Court had ruled in favor of a case submitted by Attorney General Mohamed Anil, disqualifying lawmakers who leave their party, joins another or is expelled from the party.

Following the ruling, Elections Commission (EC) had removed Thulusdhoo constituency MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, Maduvvari constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth, Dhihdhoo constituency MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed and Villingilli constituency MP Saud Hussain from their seats.

MPs Waheed and Ameeth were taken into police custody on Monday afternoon, after being removed from the premises. While police claim that they had entered the building to remove those who are no longer members of the parliament, it is important to note that the officers proceeded to remove all parliamentarians present.

The joint opposition, who has filed the case at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, have condemned the ruling, adding that the AG had filed the case 'solely to defend his position'.
