The Criminal Court has remanded a man who was arrested for suspected theft.
A 43-year-old Maldivian man accused of theft, was arrested in connection with the case.
The suspect was remanded for a period of 15 days, at a location allocated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
His remand period will expire on July 10.
The court order stated that some evidence implicating the crime he committed, has been submitted against the suspect.
According to the incident report filed in connection with the case, the man was arrested by officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) who attended the scene where a man was being held captive for snatching a gold chain off a foreigner.
However, the suspect has denied this allegation against him, stating that he was not the one who snatched the gold chain and that the crime was committed by two men who passed by on a motorcycle, at the time.
According to the suspect, he was the one who stopped the two men and returned the gold chain to its owner.
However, eye witnesses at the scene at the time, told police officers that he was the one who snatched the chain.
The Criminal Court has ordered his detention, for the safety and security of the community.
The court order also highlighted that the man has a criminal record.
Judge Ibrahim Ihusan issued the court order.
