An inmate doing time at Maafushi Prison has died.

This was revealed by the Maldives Correctional Service on Friday.

The authority confirmed that a man who was serving his sentence at the prison complex in Maafushi island of Kaafu atoll, passed away.

The deceased inmate has been identified as Ameenul Islam, aged 29 and native to Bangladesh.

The authority revealed that the inmate wasn’t responsive when checked after officers failed to wake him up for breakfast call.

The man was immediately rushed to the Maafushi Health Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The corrections cited the Maafushi Heath Center having reported that the death was due to cardiac arrest.

Ameenul Islam was serving a prison sentence after being found guilty of sexual misconduct. He was serving a seven year sentence.

Maldives Correctional Service went on to reveal that Ameenul Islam had not been receiving treatment for any illnesses before his death.

The corrections authority had also informed relevant authorities such as the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the National Integrity Commission after the inmate was taken to the health center.
