The commencement of the President’s Cup 2023 has been postponed.

The President’s Cup was initially scheduled to commence on Sunday evening. However, it has been delayed to kick off on Monday instead.

This has been confirmed by the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

FAM revealed that the delay was due to the sudden passing of FAM’s Competition Department Head Ismail Riyaz’s daughter.

The association highlighted that the tournament would kick off with the first game scheduled for Monday. It was earlier scheduled to commence the tournament with Club Valencia competing against Club Eagles.

Maziya Sports and Recreation Club and TC Sports Club will go head-to-head in the first game of this year’s President’s Cup.

With the delay, the pre-match press conferences scheduled to take place on Sunday have also been pushed back to Monday.

This year’s football season kick started with a charity shield game between Maziya and Eagles.

Club Valencia was crowned the champions of last season’s President’s Cup. The club took the championship title after beating Maziya with a score of 2 – 1. Valencia took the championship title without losing a single match in last season’s President’s Cup.

This was the club’s second victory in the President’s Cup since 2008. Valencia took home the trophy during 1993, 1994, 1998 and 1999 as well.
