President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has attended the opening plenary session of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5).
The opening plenary session of LDC5 was held on Sunday.
This year, the once-a-decade conference is held at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha, Qatar.
The Maldives is the third country to graduate from low-income country status to middle-income country status.
Low-income nations with significant structural barriers to sustainable development are referred to as LDCs by the United Nations. Forty-six nations currently hold LDC status.
The 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) aims to accelerate sustainable development where it is most needed internationally and maximize the potential of LDCs to assist them in moving forward on the path to prosperity.
The plenary session also featured a commemorative event to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Group of LDCs.
President Solih departed to Qatar on Saturday, on his tour of three countries. As such, Qatar was his first stop.
After his visit to Qatar, the President will travel to Serbia where the two countries are set to sign a number of agreements.
The final leg of President Solih’s visit will take him to Germany, where he will meet with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and hold bilateral discussions between the two countries.
