The man who was seen indiscreetly peddling drugs in the congested capital Malé City, has been arrested.
The arrest comes not long after a video showing a reckless drug deal out in the open during daytime, in a street of the capital city, went viral on social media.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the man seen in the video was arrested on Friday evening.
The suspect has been identified as a 25-year-old Maldivian man.
The 25-year-old has since been given a 15-day remand period upon being presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing.
The police institution has also revealed that they are conducting further investigations into the case of drug peddling.
The 40-second video clip shows a man sitting on a parked motorcycle, joined by two others. The man is seen openly handing a packet suspected to be drugs, to another individual who handed him a note of MVR 100.
Another individual follows soon after and is seen buying similar packets from the dealer.
Drug abuse and addiction is a major issue facing the Maldivian communities.
The police institution continues their efforts to crack down on drug trafficking networks and curb drug smuggling as well as trafficking across the country.
