Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has applauded the excellent work of Senior Sergeant Hassan Adil in the investigation that led to the jailing of a child molester.
Mohamed Shazleef slapped with a 40-year prison sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor earlier this week.
He was charged with rape in connection with the incident that took place in the wooded area of an island in Laamu atoll.
He was found guilty by the Criminal Court which slapped him with the jail sentence for raping the minor and producing pornographic materials, on January 18.
In a Twitter post on Thursday, CP Hameed congratulated Sergeant Adil from Laamu Gan Police for his “excellent” investigative work that gave 40 years imprisonment for child sexual offender Mohamed Shazleef, native to Kalaidhoo island in Laamu atoll.
CP Hameed added that this mirrors the “strong” police response to violence against women and girls.
The rape case is to have taken place on 6 January 2018 and the Prosecutor General’s Office has provided a summary statement in connection with the charges raised against the rapist.
As such, the culprit is also to have taken videos and pictures of the assault and abuse of the 17 -year-old girl .
Charges against the rapist were filed at the Criminal Court on 5 February 2018.
The charges of rape were proven at court under Article 14(c) of the Sexual Offences Act and he was jailed for 20 years behind bars.
Further, he was also found guilty of producing pornographic material in connection with the case, for which he was slapped with an additional 20 years in prison.
With this verdict, Shazleef will serve a 40 year jail sentence. However the period he spent in detention before the verdict will be omitted from the period.
