An inmate who was jailed pending sentencing at Maafushi Prison, has died.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has identified the deceased inmate to be Mohamed Nasheed, 43 a native of Muli island in Meemu atoll.
Corrections revealed that Nasheed’s cell mate had informed the guards when he began suffering from breathing difficulties, upon which he was immediately rushed to the Maafushi Prison complex’s medical center.
Nasheed had not responded to CPR, following which the doctor declared him dead at around 05:26pm on Thursday.
Nasheed was put behind bars until a verdict was heard in his trial on drug-related charges.
The corrections authority has also revealed that they had informed the family of the deceased alongside Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service (MPS), Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission, after Mohamed was rushed to the hospital.
