Maldives Police Service (MPS) has not made any arrests in connection with the case of alleged sexual assault in Dhiffushi island of Kaafu atoll, which has churned public outcry since it surfaced.

Police revealed that they received reports of a 14-year-old girl falling victim to sexual assault. However, they have not found any evidence linking the accused man to the said crime, so far in their findings.

The police institution did not disclose the identity of the accused individual, who has denied all accusations against him.

The case caught the public’s eye after the residents of the said island in Kaafu atoll, joined hands to attack the man who was accused by the residents, of molesting the minor. The clash was controlled only after a team of the police Special Operations unit arrived in the island.

Police revealed that the accused individual, along with some of the officers who arrived in the island had attained injuries of altering severity.

An arrest was made in the island, after police officers were attacked by the mob of angry island residents. Arrested was a 22-year-old, who is accused of assaulting an officer.

Alongside the sexual assault accusations, the police institution is also running probes into the brutal attack on the accused individual, violence against police officers as well as the case of residents damaging property at the island’s health center.

When questioned by RaajjeMV, police revealed that investigations into the accusations of sexual assault are still underway, however, the accused has not been arrested.

The individual accused of sexually assaulting a minor and attacked by an angry mob of Dhiffushi residents, is still seeking treatment for the injuries he attained in the assault.

The public has since been urged to not take measures into their own hands in connection with such cases, and to let the authorities do what needs to be done, legally and under the mandate linked to such criminal offenses.
