The first amendment to the Water and Sewerage Act has been ratified.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the first amendment to the act on Tuesday.
The People’s Majlis passed the bill at its 35th sitting of the first session on April 25.
Following ratification, the amendment, (Law no. 8/2020) has been published in the government gazette.
According to the President’s Office, the bill repeals and restructures some sections of the legislation.
As such, it has added two subsections to Section 11, which detail quality assurance measures such as consulting with experts when designing sewerage systems.
In addition to this, the bill also adds subsections to Section 54 of the law which allows authorities to impose fines on contractors for failing to adhere to standards set in the law.
The act highlights that penalties could range from MVR 500 to MVR one million.
