The ‘Presidency of Hope’ of the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid has promised to deliver for people by putting the rights of all at the core.

The Maldivian Foreign Minister made this remark at the 12th session of the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing for the purpose of strengthening the protection of the human rights of older persons, on Monday.

PGA Shahid in his message noted that the only way to build a prosperous and resilient economies is by putting the rights of all at the core.

With this being said, the PGA urged the communities to foster healthy ageing and improve the lives of older people and their families and communities and to renew the focus on the four action areas in accordance with the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing.

The four action areas include creating age-friendly environments, fostering the abilities of older people by doing away with the stereotypes associated with age, delivering integrated and affordable health services to older people and providing access to long-term care to ensure a life with dignity.

The PGA also urged Member States to support the work of the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing by enhancing the protection of the human rights of older persons, including considering feasibility of further instruments and measures.
