Suman Mia, the primary suspect in the murder of Ismail Umar, Lh. Hinnavaru, has been found guilty of murder.

The hearing of Ismail's murder case was carried out at the Criminal Court on Wednesday.

Presiding over the case is Judge Ali Adam.

Ismail Umar was found gruesomely murdered, in the ice place in Ihavandhoo island of Haa Alifu atoll on June 16, 2017. He was murdered in his sleep.

Suman Mia was arrested and regards to the murder case and first-degree murder charges were raised against him.

During the preliminary hearing held on 28 November 2017, Mia confessed to the crime, explaining in graphic detail about the chain of events leading up to the gruesome murder.

In his testimony, Mia emphasized that he was not coerced to confess. He told the court that he decided to kill Ismail Umar because he was full of complaints.

Mia noted that he was constantly in trouble with his wife, who lives in Bangladesh, because of Umar. He stated that this was the result of him not being able to take his wife's call, because of Ismail Umar's disapproval.

Mia even said that he was not being paid for the overtime work he was doing.

Mia, who first worked in Felivaru, was transferred to the Ihavandhoo Ice Plant without his approval, said Mia during his confession at the court. According to Mia, he had requested Umar to transfer him back to Felivaru, but that Umar did not want listen to him.

He told the Court about how he purchased a 12-foot rope with the intention of strangling Umar. He said that he decided to take a knife with him, incase he failed to kill Umar with just the rope.

Mia entered Umar's room during dawn, with the rope and knife and tried to strangle him with the rope. However, Umar woke up and started struggling and Mia used the knife and stabbed him. He told the court that Umar grabbed the knife during the struggle and that he was even cut during the struggle before he was able to snatch the knife back and stab him again.

He said that he then pushed Umar on to the floor, stabbing him in the neck, after which he continued to attack him, by kicking and hitting him. Mia added that Umar was still alive at that time, noting that his hands were still moving, and that he was attempting to say something, which, he said, was "not clear" to him.

After the murder, Mia made sure that all the doors in the room were locked and went to meet a friend. He told his friend that he had gotten into a quarrel with Umar, without telling him that he had killed the man. After this Mia worked on finding a transfer out of Ihavandhoo.

Mia told the court that he returned to the ice plant later that morning, and that Umar was motionless when he entered the room through a small window. He said that the rope and knife he used to attack Umar were still in the room. He then dragged Umar's body to a saltwater tank inside the ice plant, and had attempted to throw the body inside the tank.

However he failed to do so on his own and instead decided to throw the knife in the tank. He even confessed that he tried to clean up the blood on the floor, from when he dragged Umar's body to the tank.

Mia's ultimate plan was to head back to Bangladesh, however he was apprehended before he was able to leave the island of H.Dh. Kulhudhuffushi, where he traveled to flee.

Despite the detailed confession, the prosecutor's requested for the court to hear the testimonies of the witnesses, due to the seriousness of the crime.

Summary statement by both the government and the defense attorney were taken during the hearing held on 03 March.

Police investigation showed that the knife used to stab Umar was one used in the ice plant's kitchen, which was later discovered inside a water tank. They stated that Mia had decided to leave Umar's body at the processing unit after his attempt to dispose Umar's body by throwing it inside a tank there failed.

Police also shared that the blood found inside the plant was from when Mia dragged Umar's body, adding that Miah had attempted to clean up the blood.

Police shared that Umar had serious injuries on his body, and highlighted the injuries on his head and back. The roped which Mia used to strangle Umar was still wrapped around his neck while he was dragged to the tank.

The police also shared that the finger prints taken from the crime scene matches with those of Mia.

The government attorney at the hearing stated that there is enough evidence against Mia to accuse him of the murder of Ismail Umar.

After giving his statement, Mia once proclaimed that he was tortured by the Police and forced to confess to the crime. However, Mia did confess to his crime even back in Kulhudhuffushi. The Police Officers that Mia claimed had tortured him, met him at a later stage of the trial and that there was no complains from Mia even before he came into contact with those officers, stated that government attorney.

In the summary statement of the government, they stated that Mia had confessed to his crimes, twice in the court and that there is enough evidence against him.
