The government of Maldives is committed to work in close collaboration with the Commonwealth to uphold and work together to deliver a common future, says Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives and President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid.

This was revealed by FM Shahid in his message to the globe on the occasion of the Commonwealth Day, on Monday.

As such, noting that the Commonwealth Day is a day to reflect on the progress that has been made so far and to celebrate the people who have made it possible, FM Shahid stated that it is time to weigh up on what more can be done to realize the vision to advance shared priorities.

FM Shahid stated that the globe joins all Commonwealth members to celebrate cultural diversity, friendship and the values that binds everyone.

Further, shedding light on the number of economic issues that has been brought to the spotlight due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, FM Shahid stated that the pandemic has brought the globe’s shared fragility to the spotlight.

It has also brought with it a new set of challenges, but it also presented us with many opportunities, said the foreign minister, who went on to reveal that the need for more resilient and sustainable growth is greater in the progress to economic recovery.

With this being said, he stressed that 2022’s theme for Commonwealth Day demonstrates the several levels at which cooperation is required to ensure that the shared goals are reached.

Commonwealth-Maldives relations have been wide-ranging and prosperous. It has grown to adapt well to our foreign policy priorities over the decades. Our people are deeply appreciative of the opportunities we receive, particularly in the fields of environment, education, technology, and sports. Our joint efforts in echoing and championing the voice and needs of SIDS is fundamental as well.”
