Deliberations have been held on the government’s response to rising Covid-19 infections across the Maldives.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sat down with his Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday to engage in deliberations on the government’s response to the worsening coronavirus outbreak across the country.

During the cabinet meeting, the president discussed measures to reinforce battling the spread of the virus, increase testing capacity across the country as well as ease vaccine procedures ahead of launching a vaccine booster drive.

This comes at a time Maldives is immersed in an Omicron outbreak, with healthcare authorities predicting peak levels to be reached by month-end.

The more transmissible variant of Covid-19, Omicron surfaced in the Maldives during December 2021. Since then, Maldives has confirmed eight local Covid-19 cases.

Although the Delta variant is currently dominant, Omicron is expected to snowball across the nation in the coming days and the entire nation faces the fear of a major community spread.
