Councilors from Magoodhoo island of Noonu atoll have applauded the incumbent government’s policy to bring development across remote communities nationwide.
As part of his recent two-day tour of five islands on Noonu atoll, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sat down with the island council, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) and with the community leaders and residents of the island on Wednesday.
The meeting saw the island councilors praising the Solih administration’s comprehensive and non-discriminatory national developmental strategy. They went on to brief the president on their plans for the island and inquired the government to seek ways to expedite the harbor extension and road development projects on the island.
Councilors went on to touch down on the need to introduce local tourism in the island.
Further, WDC members briefed the president on the challenges they face in carrying out their responsibilities due to financial constraints.
In a separate meeting with the Magoodhoo community and leaders, the residents shared their needs and concerns regarding development initiatives for the island.
Challenges faced due to the lack of a proper harbor and sports facilities for the youth was also a topic of discussion.
Listening to these concerns, the president highlighted the administration’s decentralized development strategy and the development plans for the island.
The residents were also briefed regarding the funds allocated in the budget for the year, for the harbor extension project, scheduled to commence this ongoing year.
President Solih also spoke regarding projects which have been completed so far and assured members that the necessary steps will be taken to address the needs of the island community.
Magoodhoo island was the fourth destination of the president’s five-island tour, where he was accompanied by some Cabinet Ministers and high-level government officials.
