The government remains committed to realize the current “learned and rights-conscious” younger generation’s ambitions to improve protection of human rights.

Taking the podium at the official ceremony held to mark Human Rights Day and the 18th anniversary of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), the president shed light on the dire situation previous parliamentarians were enveloped in three years ago, when they were barred from the People’s Majlis and from exercising their freedom of speech, the president said that the administration has since engaged in efforts to protect and promote human rights.

As such, current lawmakers have the freedom to speak freely without fear of undue influence or impediments, said President Solih, who stressed on the harsh realities the media faced before he assumed office in 2018.

Further, he highlighted that his administration has reversed the policy of overlooking some islands in providing development and revealed that each of his government’s projects aim to deliver on its commitment to protect and promote human rights without discrimination.

Giving the assurance that his administration will work tirelessly to promote and protect the rights of children, women and elderly, the president reaffirmed that all forms of harassment and violence against them will not be tolerated.

In conclusion, the president applauded the HRCM members and employees for their efforts to promote, protect and uphold human rights across the Maldives and urged HRCM to pay greater attention to all aspects of human rights.
