A new ice plant has been inaugurated in Gaafaru island of Kaafu atoll.

As part of his brief visit to join the activities to commemorate the 41st National Fishermen’s Day on Friday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated the 25-tonne ice plant developed on the island.

The project, valued at MVR 3.5 million, was contracted to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) by the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture.

The 25-tonne ice plant is accompanied by a 50-tonne cold storage.

The president was accompanied by Vice President Faisal Naseem, on the trip.

Following the inauguration ceremony, President Solih and VP Naseem observed a fish filleting contest.

Afterwards, the vice president unveiled a monument built in the harbor area of the island, symbolizing the friendly and hospitable nature of the fishing community.

As part of the celebrations, the fisheries ministry also launched a ‘Fisheries Expo’ on the island, which was toured by the president and vice president, where President Solih launched five new products by MIFCO.
