The government remains committed to engage with the fishing community especially in policy-making stages, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Enroute to Gaafaru island in Kaafu atoll on Friday, President Solih joined a fleet of fishing vessels gathered near Gulhifalhu to voice the concerns of fishermen.

Joining the fleet, the president briefed them on the government’s plans to expand the fishing sector as well as efforts to provide fair prices.

The gathering at sea was organized by the Trade Union for Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen, to express their issues and complaints over the sector.

The meeting saw members of the union and fishermen briefing the president on information about some of the difficulties and challenges they face, including the use of Malé City’s harbor, concerns over the floor price or yellowfin tuna and a lack of legislation governing the sector.

Further, they extended gratitude for the decision by the government, to lower the price of ice.

Listening to their concerns over the lack of relevant legislation, the president assured that bills on industrial relations and occupational safety have been drafted and that the government will urge the People’s Majlis to pass the bills in the upcoming parliament session.

The president also extended wishes to the fleet of fishermen on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day marked on Friday.

He also shed light on the role played by fishermen and other industry stakeholders towards economic development following the Covid-19 outbreak.

President Solih travelled to Gaafaru Island to join celebrations of the 41st National Fishermen’s Day, on Friday.
