Members of the Women’s Development Committee of Maldives capital, Malé City have briefed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on challenges they face in development planning.

During the first-ever meeting held with the members at the President’s Office on Thursday, the WDC members of the congested capital city were inquired by the president regarding their ongoing activities and future plans.

The meeting saw President Solih describing the amendments to the Decentralization Act, through which the Solih administration pioneered the establishment of Women’s Development Committees to empower local councils and boost female roles in governance, to have proven to carry high value and allowed greater powers and privileges to local councils.

The Malé WDC members briefed the country’s leader on their activities carried out within the past six months and the challenges they faced throughout, including the lack of a proper office.

Members also individually shared their concerns including issues linked to housing, waste management and other social issues faced by residents of Villimalé and Hulhumalé.

Expressing satisfaction over the achievements of the committee, particularly in enhancing the status of women in the capital, the president shared the latest updates of development plans for the city and assured the WDC members that the government would find cordial solutions for their concerns.
