The physical work on the cancer hospital project and the tertiary hospital project in Gan island in Laamu atoll, is to begin next year.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made this announcement during a meeting with the Gan island councilors at the presidential residence Mulee’aage on Saturday. The meeting was joined by MP for Gan constituency, Mohamed Wisam.
Discussions during the meeting revolved around needs and concerns of the island community, with councilors revealing that the importance the government gives to the island’s development is mirrored in the initiation of mega development projects such as the cancer hospital project and the international airport development project.
Highlighting that there are several projects budgeted to be carried out in the island in 2022, councilors requested the government to kick start the work on these projects as soon as possible.
Further, discussions also revolved around the opinions of the residents and council on the need for housing projects, road development projects, beach protection projects, solving the space limitations in schools, the need for upgrading health services, water and sanitation needs and many other developmental initiatives.
Sharing the latest updates on some projects to be implemented in the island, President Solih revealed that the additional projects would be carried out on the island under the government's vision as well.
He affirmed that meetings will be held with ministries to enable and find mutual solutions to the council's requests and concerns.
