Nine journalists snagged awards at the Maldives Media Council (MMC)'s annual Journalism Awards 2020.

MMC announced a total of 12 categories for the 2020 awards and 88 submissions were received, by 56 journalists. However, two categories were left out at the awards of 2020 as not enough submissions were received.

Two journalists from RaajjeTV snagged awards in two categories this year, with Sangu TV journalists achieving awards in three categories.

While a total of 12 categories have been announced, 87 names were submitted for 10 categories.

Vaguthu Online’s Mohamed Azuheem Azeez is the investigative reporter of 2020.

Journalism Awards 2020 recipients are:

  • Social category – Amna Imad, RaajjeTV
  • Politics category – Maahith Hussain Rasheed, Sangu TV
  • Legal category – Laisa Ahmed, RaajjeTV
  • Business and economy category – Fathmath Shana Mohamed, Mihaaru News
  • Sports category – Mohamed Hamdhoon, Adhadhu News
  • Photojournalist of 2020 – Ibrahim Shabil, Vaguthu Online
  • Video journalist of 2020 – Hawwa Minha, Sangu TV
  • Feature category – Maahith Hussain Rasheed, Sangu TV

Most promising journalist of 2020 was not awarded due to insufficient submissions.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof had joined the awards ceremony as guest of honor. Speaking at the ceremony, Mahloof said that journalism is tiresome work and that the sacrifice made by journalists is appreciated and accepted by the whole nation.

Minister Mahloof has urged journalists across the nation to continue their work diligently and in sincerity.

The journalism awards have been conferred annually since 2014.
