The Prosecutor General’s Office has launched probes into the death of an inmate who was jailed pending the outcome of his trial.
Ismail Shabeen, 46 and native to Maldives capital Malé City, died while receiving emergency treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, at around 7:30pm on Wednesday.
PG Office revealed that they have begun investigating the death and that required action will pursue following the conclusion of the investigation.
Maldives Correctional Service revealed that Shabeen was rushed to the hospital at around 7pm, after he reported to having difficulties breathing. He was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit after his health deteriorated further.
The corrections department noted that he was a diabetic patient.
Shabeen was jailed on several counts of charges on drug-related crimes including abuse, possession and trafficking.
After Shabeen was transferred to the hospital, the corrections authority had informed the Inspector Of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service as well as the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.
