A total of 47,100 persons had cast their ballots during the internal congress elections of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held on September 25.

During the polls to elect members for the MDP National Congress for the next five years, 50.31 percent of eligible voters had shown up to cast their ballots.

93,612 persons were eligible to vote in the election.

This year’s congress elections were very competitive, with the race won by a majority of candidates who support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

MDP revealed that of the total eligible voters, 13,084 were located in the capital. Of this, only 4,097 persons had turned up to cast their ballots.

Southernmost Addu City saw 5,353 voters taking part in the polls, with 549 persons in Kulhudhuffushi City coming out to vote. Further, 1,472 persons had cast their votes from Fuvahmulah City.

According to the main ruling party, only those who had registered in the party’s registry by April 24 were eligible to cast their ballots. The Elections Commission had earlier revealed that by June 30, the party’s registry had 53,139 names listed.
