Maldives on Sunday reported its first Covid-19 related death after 18 consecutive days of no such fatalities.
The Health Protection Agency said that a 75-year-old local woman receiving treatment for Covid-19 at the Hulhumale' Medical Facility (HMF) had passed away on Sunday morning.
While this is the second death reported in August, it pushes the country's Covid-19 death toll to 223.
The island nation reported the highest number of deaths in a single month since the pandemic began, during May 2021, when a total of 88 deaths were confirmed. 50 deaths were confirmed in June while 11 deaths were reported in July.
While Maldives reported its first Covid-19 fatality in April 2020, the archipelago nation has confirmed a total of 79,864 infections. 77,953 people have recovered from the virus, and with the 223 deaths confirmed, there are currently 1,677 active cases across the country.
