Elections to select block leaders in Male’ City to be held on October 30

Male’ City Council has announced that they will be hosting the elections to select a block leader for every block in the city, on October 30.

The candidates must meet certain conditions to take part in the elections – they must reside in the block, be 18 years of age and must not be charged with any sort of crime such as theft, harassment or corruption. They must also not be charged with child abuse, be locked up for the investigation of any crimes or be under investigation for any crimes. Furthermore, if they were charged with a crime unrelated to sexual harassment, a three-year period since their sentence must have passed, they must not be involved in any other elections and must not be someone who is already in a political position.

In order to officially take part in the elections, individuals must submit a form, a copy of their ID card and a letter with the signatures of 10 people from the block they wish to represent.

While applications are now being accepted, interested parties can send in forms until 2pm on September 16, to Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Customer Service building’s third and fourth floor. The voting boxes for this election will be kept in Hulhumale’, Henveiru, Galolhu, Machangoalhi, Maafannu and Villimale’.

The block leader must know the living situation of those who reside in the block, be able to share that information whenever the council asks, must be able to tell where people live within the block, acknowledge the issues of those who reside in the block and work to solve those issues by presenting them to the council.  

Moreover, block leaders must aid the council in their development plans and in surveying people to provide the services the people of the block need.

Furthermore, block leaders must take initiative to involve people in the block in development projects of the council and help the council execute their strategic action plan, in addition to aiding them in emergency situations.
