Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has met with the President-designate of the UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, Alok Sharma.

The two met on Tuesday in London.

The Maldivian foreign minister met with Sharma in his capacity as as the President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to his own tweet.

Shahid said that he had a good meeting with the COP26 President-designate, "on working together to build momentum for COP26".

The minister said that responding to the needs of the planet, especially climate change, is a key priority of his "presidency of hope".

Elected in June, Shahid will assume office next month.

During his victory speech at this year's UNGA session in June, Shahid said that multilateralism since a young age, adding that he was “convinced it was the way forward”.

And now that he has been elected UNGA president, Shahid said that his “ultimate objective is to strengthen multilateralism, enhance cooperation, make the UN deliver, and reign in a presidency of hope”.

However, his first five main priorities are (as per order), recovering from Covid-19, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet, respecting the rights of all and revitalizing the United Nations.
