President Solih forwarded five names for the one spot at EC

The list of possible candidates for the vacant position in the Elections Commission sent by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has been forwarded to the Committee on Independent Institutions for reviewing.

During the first sitting of the third session of Parliament, the list by the President was read by the Secretary General. The President’s list of recommended candidates include: Mohamed Asif, Shahula Ismail, Azleema Ahmed, Ahmed Mansoor and Mariyam Haneefa Khalid.

While Elections Commission President Ahmed Shareef resigned back in June, a new president can only be elected after a fifth member is appointed to the commission.

Noting that the commission had organized three major elections during his tenure, Shareef had previously told RaajjeMV that "cycle completes" after this. He said that the purpose of his resignation to give someone else the opportunity to handle the work.

However, Shareef stressed that he will continue to serve the public.

As per laws, EC president must be appointed within 60 days after the post goes vacant. While the period is excluding public holidays, the recent drawn-out holiday had stretched this period to 90 days.
