Most islands have been released from Covid-19 monitoring with only nine remaining.
According to Health Protection Agency (HPA), as of the 12th of August, only nine islands remain under monitoring. The are; R. Dhuvaafaru, K. Kaashidhoo, M. Kolhufushi, Sh. Feevah, HA. Thakandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, L. Fonadhoo, AA. Himandhoo and Th. Hirilandhoo.
The island that has been under monitoring for the longest time is Dhuvaafaru which was brought under monitoring on the 25th of May. Kaashidhoo, Kolhufushi and Feevah were put under monitoring in July, and Fonadhoo, Himandhoo and Hirilandhoo were put under monitoring in August.
Islands are placed under monitoring following the confirmation of Covid-19, to avoid a further spread within the community as health officials conduct the required work such as contact tracing and testing.
Although the number of islands under monitoring have fallen to nine, it is to be noted that 73 islands had gone under monitoring in the month of May due to the worsening of the Covid-19 situation. In those days, in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in atolls, a curfew was established along with other restrictions.
As the Covid-19 situation in the Maldives is no longer severe, especially in the capital city, most restrictions have been eased. However, HPA declared that even vaccinated persons travelling to islands under monitoring are required to complete the quarantine period.
