Shareef was appointed the chief of the Elections Commission days ahead of the 2018 presidential elections on March 6

Elections Commission Chairman Ahmed Shareef has resigned from the commission.

Shareef announced this via Twitter on Tuesday, expressing content in having “conducted sincere and dedicated work over the course of the last three national elections”.

While he did not disclose a reason for resignation, Shareef revealed plans to continue serving the people.

Shareef was appointed the chief of the Elections Commission days ahead of the 2018 presidential elections on March 6, by the President Abdulla Yameen.

Three major elections have been conducted during his time as the EC chairman; 2018 presidential elections, 2019 parliamentary elections and 2020 local council and women’s development awards held this year after being postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Before being appointed as the Chairman of Elections Commission, Shareef was the Managing Director of state utilities company Fenaka Corporation.
