Maldives active Covid-19 case count has dropped below 15,000.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reported 323 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday. This includes 163 cases from capital Male’ City, 143 from residential islands, nine from resorts and eight cases from liveaboard vessels.

While this pushes the country’s Covid-19 tally to 69,536, active cases have dropped to 14,281 with the 1,663 recoveries reported on Thursday. Total recoveries stand at 55,055.

The country has seen a total of 191 deaths, with the last one reported on Wednesday.

The number of hospitalized patients has also decreased to 115 from Wednesday’s 146.

While the government began easing Covid-19 restrictions last year following a decline in cases, there has since been a spike, especially last month forcing authorities to strengthen Covid-19 restrictions especially in the capital. This includes an unofficial lockdown of the city, with a curfew imposed from 4pm to 8am and residents requiring permits to be out even during the remaining time.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday announced that the strengthened safety measures will remain for an additional week, and will be extended again if the need arises.

Since the measures were strengthened in mid-May, reported daily cases have been decreasing gradually.
