Active Covid-19 cases continue to drop in Maldives with increase in recoveries

1,369 recoveries, 370 news cases reported on Tuesday

Pushes the country’s Covid-19 tally to 68,872

While safety measures were strengthened in mid-May due to spike in cases, they have been extended for an additional week

Maldives Covid-19 active cases has dropped to 17,461 with the 370 new cases and 1,369 recoveries reported on Tuesday.

The 370 new cases were confirmed from the 4,263 samples tested. 217 of the cases are from the greater Male’ area, 148 from residential islands, four from resorts as well as one case from an island under development.

This pushes the country’s Covid-19 tally to 68,872.

With the 1,369 recoveries reported on Tuesday, a total of 51,213 patients have recovered from the virus.

The country’s total death count from Covid-19 stands at 189, with one death reported on Tuesday thus far.

152 patients are currently admitted at hospitals across the country.

While the government began easing Covid-19 restrictions last year following a decline in cases, there has since been a spike, especially last month forcing authorities to strengthen Covid-19 restrictions especially in the capital. This includes an unofficial lockdown of the city, with a curfew imposed from 4pm to 8am and residents requiring permits to be out even during the remaining time.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday announced that the strengthened safety measures will remain for an additional week, and will be extended again if the need arises.

Since the measures were strengthened in mid-May, reported daily cases have been decreasing gradually.
