The man who was arrested for threatening to bomb the People’s Majlis building, has been remanded by 15 days.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested Hassan Alaan Ali, 28 under terror accusations on Wednesday.
His remand hearing was held at the Criminal Court the same day, where judge Adam Mohamed stressed that his actions compromised the safety of the entire society.
Alaan was arrested for commenting on RaajjeTV’s Facebook live, asserting that the People’s Majlis building needs to be blown up.
Police stated that this is an act that support terrorism and that such cases will be investigated as serious offenses. The authority also revealed that the seriousness of the threat the comment poses is amplified as it came at a time a group of people had carried out an assassination attempt on the life of Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Police raided the suspect’s residence and confiscated two mobile phones, two hard drives as well as a pen drive.
Speaking at the hearing, Alaan’s lawyer revealed that there is no proof that Alaan had made the comment, highlighting that “anyone” can make a facebook account these days. The lawyer is to have noted that no threatening incidents had occurred following his comment either.
Police revealed that such threats to national security are investigated very seriously and that they will ensure the safety and protection of the people.
Security levels inside and near the People’s Majlis building were strengthened following intel reports of the security threat to parliament, earlier.
Following the attack on Speaker Nasheed’s life, MNDF’s armed presence continues throughout the country and that they have boosted security measures nationwide as well.
Nasheed underwent a 16-hour procedure to remove shrapnel lodged inside his body in the IED explosion denotated near his residence as he was heading out to attend an event on an island. The IED was strapped to a blue motorcycle and denoted right before Nasheed stepped inside his car. His security personnel were quick to respond and transported the injured former president to ADK Hospital within seven minutes.
MNDF officers as well as Nasheed’s security personnel attained several injuries due to the explosion as well.
