Former president and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has been discharged from hospital in Germany, where he had been receiving medical treatment following an assassination attempt that injured him and four others in the Maldives' capital on 6 May.

Speaking to Raajje MV, former president Nasheed's family revealed that he had been discharged from hospital in Germany, but was required to perform medical check-ups twice a week. Speaker Nasheed's family stated that they would likely remain in Germany for another month.

The Maldives' first democratically elected president and leader of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed had been seriously injured in the 6 May terror attack, which has since been described as an attempt to assassinate one of the nations most recognizable leaders. The attack has drawn global attention, with several diplomats and intergovernmental bodies condemning the attempt to take Speaker Nasheed's life and calling for a swift investigation into the case.

Abbas Faiz, a British national, was appointed as a Special Envoy to the Government of Maldives on Thursday by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to monitor the investigation, prosecution and trial of the terrorist attack against Speaker Nasheed. With more than 30 years of experience in monitoring human rights in the South Asian region, Abbas was previously employed at Amnesty International as the most senior advisor to the Secretary-General on the countries in his brief, and has published several papers on the human rights situation in the Maldives.

Four people have been arrested following the terror attack which targeted former president Nasheed on 6 May. All four are currently in remand, and three suspects have not guilty to the charges raised against them in court. Police and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) have been conducting a number of special operations against religious extremism and terror across the Maldives following the assassination attempt against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. Nine people were arrested in an operation conducted earlier in Addu City with suspected links to the terrorist attack against Nasheed, with authorities also having seized a number of objects and belongings believed to be critical for investigations in this case.
