Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that an alliance between the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats is best for the Maldives.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ on Saturday, Nasheed wrote that this is the best option for the Maldives presently. While MDP and Democrats are advocating for government accountability, some members of the public have been calling for the two parties to work together to hold the government accountable.

President Nasheed said that he believes the best course of action for both the country and the two parties currently, is for and the two parties to unite and work together.

The Democrats was formed with some former senior members of MDP. Although they do not officially work together, the two parties share similar views on issues such as defending the constitution, separation of powers, and maintaining the independence of independent institutions.
