Former President Mohamed Nasheed has praised Ali Shujau, who resigned from the position of Commissioner of Police, stating that priority should always be given to the welfare and benefit of the people of the Maldives.
Shujau resigned from the position of CP some time on Saturday night. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu accepted Shujau’s resignation, shortly after receiving it.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’ in connection with the CP’s resignation, Nasheed highlighted that taking responsibility for issues or resigning to prevent further escalation of problems is the most graceful democratic principle.
Nasheed also stated that he welcomes Shujau's resignation from his position.
At the time of Shujau's resignation from the position of CP, both the police and Shujau himself had been facing intense public backlash regarding the case of a young woman who fell onto the roof of a warehouse from the ninth floor of a building in the capital, Malé City.
Calls for Shujau's resignation had also been made during the ongoing series of protests in Malé seeking justice for the victim.
Among the demands made by the protesters included calls for Shujau's resignation. In addition to this, they have also demanded the resignations of Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.
The public has also heavily criticized the statements made by Shujau during the press conference held by the police regarding the case.
