The perpetrators behind the terrorist attack to take Former President and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’s life will be brought to justice, assures President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

In a televised address to the nation on Wednesday evening, the president extended felicitations of the blessed day of Eid Al-Fitr celebrated on Thursday to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan 1442.

The president urged the Maldivian citizens to keep the auspiciousness of the day alive by connecting to family and friends to exchange greetings, despite being at the mercy of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As such, he shed light on the importance of Eid in the Maldivian community in terms of culture as well as religion and society as a whole.

Stressing that a dark shadow looms over the joy of Eid this year, the president noted that the country is currently in a worsening situation of the coronavirus pandemic, and was recently shaken by a terrorist attack that targeted the Speaker on May 6 as he was heading out to attend an event in an island.

Highlighting that the assassination attempt has churned fear and uneasiness in the hearts of the people, the president condemned the “inhumane” attack and asserted that the government will not, under any circumstance, tolerate any attempts to take human life.

With this being said the president gave his assurance that the perpetrators will be brought to justice after thorough investigations are conducted.

Elaborating on the situation surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, President Solih said that Maldives has been forced under stricter measures in the face of a Covid-19 surge.

In this regard the public has been urged to work together in unity to curb the spread of the fatal infection, highlighting that unity is crucial to reduce the stress on the healthcare system and prevent the situation “from spiraling out of control”.

In his address, the president also extended gratitude to all healthcare workers, volunteers as well as the members of the armed forces for their services to the nation during the pandemic, which Solih described to be selfless.

As International Nurses Day was also celebrated on Wednesday, the president extended felicitations of the day to all nurses of the country, expressing thanks to their contributions to the society.
