111 of the 253 new cases reported Wednesday were from the Male' area, with 61 additional cases reported from inhabited islands, 64 new cases from operational resorts and an additional 17 cases reported from islands reserved for industrial use.

Health authorities tested a total of 2,905 samples for the infection between Tuesday and Wednesday.

With this, the Maldives total Covid-19 case tally is now 26,920. The active case count has once again topped the 3,000-mark with a total of 3,286 active cases of Covid-19 across the Maldives at present.

The number of total recoveries observed for Covid-19 in Maldives has increased to 23,935 as an additional 132 recoveries from the infection were confirmed by Wednesday's end.

With several islands placed under monitoring, Covid-19 health and safety restrictions are being strengthened across the Maldives in order to control transmission of the virus. Infections have been increasing in atolls outside the capital, as more than a hundred Covid-19 cases were detected from Male' on Wednesday. The Health Protection Agency has been steadily easing measures in the Greater Male' region, where the number of new cases being detected had been decreasing prior to a spike over the weekend on Saturday.

The statistics made public by HPA on Wednesday also denote an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases being detected across resorts. As of now, 83 persons remain admitted in hospitals for Covid-19 treatment across the country.

As the fasting month of Ramazan is now underway, authorities have been working to control Covid-19 transmissions without initiating a city-wide lockdown in the capital. The curfew and vehicle movement restriction order in effect across the nation's capital was also dissolved recently.

However, the state of public health emergency across the country has been extended for another month until 4 May, with authorities most recently having confirmed the 71st death from Covid-19 in Maldives. Two deaths linked to the infection were confirmed on Friday, with the most recent death reported on Tuesday, including which a total of 23 people have died from the infection in Maldives in 2021. With a Covid-19 mortality rate of 0.26 percent, most of those who have passed away after contracting the infection in the island nation are elderly persons.

Public health authorities continue to stress the importance of following Covid-19 health and safety measures set to control transmission of the virus, including social distancing, avoiding public gatherings, maintaining hand hygiene and effective masking while outdoors.
